わが国の奄美大島から沖縄、それに台湾や太平洋諸島に広く分布しています。高さは３〜６メートルになり、太い気根を出します。葉は線状披針形でかたい革質、葉の縁と裏面主脈上に棘があります。夏、枝先の肉穂花序に花を咲かせます。果実は黄赤色に熟し、食べることができます。「やしがに」の好物とのことです。

タコノキ科タコノキ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Pandanus odoratissimus。英名は Screw pine。

Screw pine (Pandanus odoratissimus) belongs to Pandanaceae (the Screwpine family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed widely to the Amami and the Okinawa Islands of Japan, as well as Taiwan and the Pacific Islands. This tree can reach 3-6 m in height, and it has also thick aerial roots. Leaves are linear-lanceolate, hard leathery with spines on the edges and backside veines. Small flowers on the terminal spadix come in summer. Fruits ripen yellow-red and edible. Coconut crabs have a good stomack for these fruits.
