東南アジアから中国が原産です。わが国へは飛鳥時代に渡来し、染料植物として栽培されてきました。よく分枝して、高さは５０〜７０センチになります。葉は広披針形で互生します。葉は藍色染料の原料のほか、漢方では、解熱剤や殺菌剤としても用いられます。別名で「たであい（蓼藍）」とも呼ばれます。

タデ科タデ属の一年草で、学名は Polygonum tinctorium。英名は Indigo plant。

The Indigo plant (Polygonum tinctorium) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It was introduced into Japan in Asuka Era (about 1400 years ago) and had been cultivated as a dyeing plant. It is an annual herb that is native to Southeast Asia and China. This herb is much branched and can reach 50-70 cm in height. The leaves are broad lanceolate and alternate. The leaves are used for the raw materials of indigo dye and herbal medicine for antipyretic and sterilization.
