わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。山野にふつうに生え、とくに暖かい地方でよく見られます。蔓は長く伸びて3メートル以上になり、葉は掌状複葉で小葉が5個あります。4月から5月ごろ、淡い紫色から淡い黄白色の花を咲かせます。雌雄同株です。果実は秋に熟して食べられます。 
アケビ科アケビ属の落葉蔓性木本で、学名は Akebia quinata。英名はありません。 
"Akebi" (Akebia quinata) belongs to the family Lardizabalaceae. It is a deciduous woody vine that is distributed through Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This vine grows in fields and mountains, especially can be found at warm climate areas. The vine grows up to 3 m long, and can be palmately compound with five leaflets. The pale purple to creamy white flowers come in April to May. This vine is monoecious. The fruits ripen in fall and are edible.
