Devil's club (Oplopanax horridus) belongs to Araliaceae (the Ginseng family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to western North America; from Alaska to Oregon and northern Idaho and around the Lake Superior. This tree grows in moist forests along streams, and it can reach 1-3 m in height. The stems are covered with dense yellow spines 5-20 mm long. The leaves are cordate and divided into 7-9 lobes with long petioles. The panicles or racemes are borne atop of stems, and bloom tine greenish white flower from June to August. The fruits are globose berries and ripen red. Native Americans used stems of the plant as a poulitice, a tonic or a cold medicine.
