熱帯アメリカのメキシコからペルー、ブラジルに分布しています。成長が早く、傘のような樹冠で、高さは20〜30メートルになります。葉は羽状複葉で、小葉は2〜8対あり卵形から倒卵形をしています。また昼間しか展開せず、夕方や曇天には閉じて垂れ下がる習性があります。花は「ねむのき(合歓木)」に似て、濃いピンクの雄しべが目立ちます。東南アジアやハワイでは公園樹として植栽されています。テレビコマーシャルで「この木なんの木」に登場するのは、ハワイ州のオアフ島にある本種だそうです。 
マメ科サマネア属の常緑高木で、学名は Samanea saman。英名は Rain tree、Monkeypod tree、Saman。 
The Rain tree (Samanea saman) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed in tropical America from Mexico to Peru and Brazil. It is a fast-growing tree with an umbrella-like crown that grows 20 to 30 m tall. It has pinnate compound leaves with two to eight pairs of ovate to obovate leaflets. The leaves are only unfurled during the daytime and close and droop in the evening or on cloudy days. The flowers are similar to those of the "Mimosa", with conspicuous dark pink stamens. It is planted as a park tree in Southeast Asia and Hawaii. The tree featured in the Japanese TV commercial "What kind of tree is this tree ?" is this species on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii.
