わが国の本州、東海地方以西から四国・九州、それにインドネシアやオーストラリアに分布しています。湿地などに生え、高さは50〜100センチになります。葉は扁平な楕円形で根生します。アンペラとは、「コーリャン(高粱, Gaoliang)」の茎などで編んだ蓆をいいますが、ポルトガル語の「Ampero(日被い)」またはマレー語の「Ampela」に由来するそうです。別名で「ねびきぐさ(長引草)」とも呼ばれます。 
カヤツリグサ科アンペライ属の多年草で、学名は Machaerina rubiginosa。英名はありません。 
"Ampela-i" (Machaerina rubiginosa) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in from Tokai region of Honshu westward to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Indonesia and Australia. It grows in wetlands, etc., and is 50 to 100 cm tall. The leaves are flat, elliptic, and basal. "Ampera" refers to woven paddies made from the stems of Gaoliang, and is derived from the Portuguese word "Ampero" or the Malay word "Ampela". It is also known as "Nebiki-gusa" in Japan.
