The Agave (Agave americana) belongs to the Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to tropical America. This herb was introduced into Japan for fabric raw materials in the early days of Meiji Era (about 130 years ago). The leaves are bluish green and unspotted. When this herb is mature (7-8 years after seedling), it grows up the long flower stalks and is borne many tubular flowers in the cornical inflorescences. This is a bat-pollinated flower. After fructification it may be blighted.
