The "Ao-tsuzura-fuji" (Cocculus trilobus) belongs to the family Menispermaceae. It is a deciduous woody vine that is distributed throughout Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, Philippinne and India. This vine grows in the forest edges. The stems and leaves are covered with pale yellowish-brown hairs. The leaves are ovate to broad-ovate, alternate and usually devided into shallow lobes. It is dioecious. The panicles are borne on the axils and bloom small yellowish-white flowers. The fruits are indigo-black round and covered with white bloom in late fall. The root is used for herbal medicine for hydragogue, analgesic and antipyretic. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "木防己", and "木防己" (mu fang ji) in Chinese.
