アメリカの南西部、ユタ州からアリゾナ州、ニューメキシコ州に分布しています。乾燥した岩礫地に生え、高さは３０センチほどになります。茎は細く、上部には腺毛が生えます。根生葉は２回３出複葉です。５月から８月ごろ、茎頂に赤い花を下向きに咲かせます。萼片は暗赤色、距は淡い赤色、花弁は黄色です。「カナダおだまき（Aquilegia canadensis）」によく似ています。

キンポウゲ科オダマキ属の多年草で、学名は Aquilegia desertorum。英名は Desert columbine。

The Desert columbine (Aquilegia desertorum) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the southwestern United States, from Utah to Arizona and New Mexico. It grows on dry rocky gravel and is about 30 cm high. The stem is thin and glandular hair grows on the upper part. The basal leaves are 2 times triternate compound. From May to August, red flowers bloom downward on the shoot apex. The calyx is dark red, the spur is pale red, and the petals are yellow. It is very similar to "Aquilegia canadensis".
