Blue star (Aristea ecklonii) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is native to southeastern Africa, South Africa, Uganda and Madagascar. This herb grows along streams and margins of evergreen forest, and can reach up to 60 cm in height. The leaves are several, narrowly lanceolate and mostly basal. The blue-purple flowers bloom in spring to early summer. They open early morning and close before noon.
