わが国の本州、中部地方以北の日本海沿岸から北海道、南千島それにサハリンに分布しています。おもに山地や海岸の岩場に生え、高さは１５〜３０センチになります。葉は１〜２回３出複葉で、羽状に全裂します。葉や茎は、銀白色の絹毛で被われます。７月から９月ごろ、円錐花序をだし、淡黄色の頭花を咲かせます。名前は、この姿を朝霧の降りたさまに喩えたもの。

キク科ヨモギ属の多年草で、学名は Artemisia schmidtiana。英名は Silvermound artemisia。

The Silvermound artemisia (Artemisia schmidtiana) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from the Japan Sea side of central Honshu to Hokkaido of Japan, the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. This herb grows in mountains or coastal scrags and can reach 15-30 cm in height. The leaves are trifoliate to biternate compound and dissected pinnately. The leaves and stems are covered with silky hairs. The panicles are borne and bloom pale yellow flower-heads from July to September.
