カナダの南東部から中南部、アメリカの東部から中部に分布しています。野原や潅木帯などに生え、高さは３０〜１５０センチになります。葉は披針形から楕円形で、縁には粗い鋸歯があります。８月から１０月ごろ、分枝した枝先にいくつかの小さな頭花を咲かせます。白色から薄紫色の舌状花がつきます。果実は痩果で、先端に剛毛が生えます。

キク科シオン属の多年草で、学名は Aster lateriflorus。英名は Calico aster、White woodland aster。

The calico aster (Aster lateriflorus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perrenial herbacious plant that is distributed southeastern and south-cental Canada, the eastern and central United States. This herb grows in fields and thickets, can reach 30-150 cm in height. Leaves are lanceolate to elliptic with coarsely toothed edges. August to October, several small flower heads with white or pale purple rays are seen on the divergent branches. Fruits are achene tipped with bristles.
