ヨーロッパアルプス、アペニン山脈やピレネー山脈に分布しています。標高1200〜2300メートルの草地に生え、高さは5〜10センチほどになります。下部の葉は倒卵状披針形で葉柄があります。茎葉は無柄です。春から初夏にかけて、紫色の花を咲かせます。園芸品種も多く、白色や紅色、すみれ色などの花色があります。和名では「いわからくさ(岩唐草)」と呼ばれます。 
ゴマノハグサ科イワカラクサ属の多年草で、学名は Erinus alpinus。英名は Alpine balsam。 
The Alpine balsam (Erinus alpinus) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Alps, the Apennine and the Pyrenees mountais in Europe. This herb grows in grasslands 1200-2300 m elevation and can reach 5-10 cm in height. The lower leaves are obovate-lanceolate and petiolated. The cauline leaves are sessile. The purple flowers come in spring to early summer. There are many cultivars with white, rose-pink or violet flower colors.
