Pedicularis yezoensis

"Ezo-shiogama" (Pedicularis yezoensis) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan, and distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido. The herb grows in alpine sunny grasslands, and it can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are opposite at the underneeth of stems, the leaves of upper part of stems are alternate and coarsely toothed. The yellowish white, labiate flowers bloom at the upper axils from July to September. They are twisted and sideways-facing for attracting bees to honey.
