ヨーロッパが原産です。わが国では北海道と本州の滋賀県伊吹山に帰化しています。草地や林縁などに生え、蔓性で長さは１メートルほどになります。葉は羽状複葉で小葉は狭卵形をしています。５月から７月ごろ、葉腋から総状花序をだし淡い赤紫色の花を咲かせます。「きばなのれんりそう（黄花の連理草）」と同様に、安土桃山時代、ポルトガル人の宣教師が伊吹山に薬草園を造った名残と考えられています。

マメ科ソラマメ属の多年草で、学名は Vicia sepium。英名は Bush vetch。

The bush vetch (Vicia sepium) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe. In Japan, it is naturalized in Hokkaido and Mt. Ibuki in Shiga prefecture in Honshu. This herb grows on grasslands and forest edges, and is vine-like and about 1 m long. The leaves are pinnate compound and the leaflets are narrow-ovate. The racemes are borne at the axils and bloom pale magenta flowers from May to July. Like "Meadow vetchling" (Lathyrus pratensis), it is believed to be a remnant of Portuguese missionaries who built a herb garden on Mt. Ibuki during the Azuchi-Momoyama period (about 400 years ago).
