わが国の各地に分布しています。山地や高原の日当たりの良い湿った草地に生え、茎は直立して高さ５０〜１２０センチになります。根生葉は卵状長楕円形から披針形で長い葉柄があり、茎葉は無柄で茎を抱きます。７月から９月ごろ、茎頂に円柱形の総状花序をだし、白色から淡紅色の花を咲かせます。花弁はなく萼片が５深裂します。和名は、滋賀県の伊吹山に多く見られることから。

タデ科イブキトラノオ属の多年草で、学名は Bistorta major var. japonica。英名はありません。

|
"Ibuki-torano-o" (Bistorta major var. japonica) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Japan. This herb grows in montane to upland sunny wettish grasslands, the stems are erect and can reach 50-120 cm in height. The basal leaves are ovate-oblong to lanceolate with long petioles. The cauline leaves are sessile and enfold stems. The columnar racemes are borne on the stem apices and bloom white to pale rose-pink flowers from July to September. The flowers are non-petaled though the petaloid sepals are divided into five lobes.
