わが国の各地をはじめ、北半球に広く分布しています。山地帯から亜高山帯の針葉樹林の林床に生え、大きな群落を形成します。前年伸びた茎の中間から新しく茎を伸ばし、階段状になります。茎は2〜3回羽状に分枝し、扁平です。茎や枝の表面は小さな葉に被われます。
イワダレゴケ科イワダレゴケ属の蘚類で、学名は Hylocomium splendens。英名は Stair-step moss。
Stair-step moss (Hylocomium splendens) belongs to the family Hylocomiaceae. It is a moss that is native to throughout Japan and widely Northern Hemisphere. This moss grows on forest floors of montane to subalpine coniferous forests, and forms large clumps. The new shoots are borne at the middle of new branches, and looks stair-like in appearance. The stems are branched bipinnately to tripinnately, and flat. The surfaces of stems and branchs are covered with many tiny leaves.
