わが国の北海道から本州、四国に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは40センチほどになります。根茎は太く、横に走ります。葉は3出複葉で根生し、小葉は広卵形で3裂します。雌雄異株で、3月から4月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして白色の花を横向きに咲かせます。花弁のように見えるのは萼片です。漢方では根茎を「おうれん(黄蓮)」と呼び、健胃薬や整腸薬として用いられます。別名で「きくばおうれん(菊葉黄蓮)」とも呼ばれます。
キンポウゲ科オウレン属の常緑多年草で、学名は Coptis japonica。英名はありません。
"Ohren" belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Hokkaido south to Honshu and Shikoku of Japan. This herb grows in woods and can reach about 40 cm in height. Rhizomes are creeping sideways. Leaves are 3-lobed compounds and radical, leaflets are broad ovate and trilobate. This herb is dioecism. White flowers on terminal stalks come from March to April. Sepals look like petals. Its rhizomes are used for Chinese herbal stomachic and antiflatuent medicine.
