The Sumatran fleabane (Erigeron sumatrensis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a biennial herb that is native to South America. It has spread throughout the world and was introduced to Japan at the end of the Taisho Era (1912-1926). It is now naturalized in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. It grows on roadsides and wastelands and grows 1 to 2 m high. The entire plant is covered with soft hairs, and the basal leaves are oblanceolate, while the cauline leaves are narrowly lanceolate. From July to October, it produces a panicle at the top of the stem and produces inconspicuous flower heads. The ray florets are almost completely hidden by involucre.
