"Ooba-megi" (Berberis tschonoskyana) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Barberry family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed in Kanto district to Kinki district of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan. This shrub is thinner branched relative to Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii). The new branches are brown, not ridged and not grooved. The leaves are elliptic to obovate, alternate or fasciculate and entire. The pale yelow flowers come in April to June. The fruits ripen red.
