"Oo-choji-gamazumi" (Viburnum carlesii var. carlesii) belongs to the family Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to the Tsushima Islands in Kyushu and the Korean Peninsula. This tree grows in sunny forest edges and open cliffs, aand can reach 1-3 m in height. The leaves are opposite, broad ovate to ovate with round or short pointed tips. The small white, about 20 flowers are produced in the terminal cymes in May. They are good scented. The fruit is a red elliptic drupe about 1 cm in length, and ripen black later.
