"Oo-misumi-so" (Hepatica nobilis var. japonica f. magna) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed along the Sea of Japan of Honshu in Japan. It grows in deciduous forests and is 10-15 cm tall. It has three shallowly lobed leaves with long petioles and basal growth. 15 to 20 mm in diameter flowers bloom from March to May as the snow melts. The petal-like sepals can be light purple, white, red, or purple in color. After the flowers are finished, new leaves emerge and the old leaves die after overwintering. It is also known as "Yukiwari-so" in Japan.
