Miconia calvescens

Miconia calvescens

The Velvet tree (Miconia calvescens) belongs to Melastmataceae (the Melastome family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to tropical America. It grows to more than 15 m tall and has large, elliptic leaves that grow in pairs. The leaves are up to 80 cm long and covered with velvety hairs, characterized by three veins and lateral veins running at right angles. It produces large panicles at the ends of its branches and produces small white flowers. It was introduced to the islands of the Pacific region as an ornamental, but has become wild due to seed dispersal by fruit-eating birds, causing problems such as landslides due to its shallow roots and destruction of the ecosystem due to its large leaves that cover it.
