マダガスカル島の南西部に分布しています。「バオバブ」と樹形が似ていて、高さは９メートルほどになります。幹は肥大して、水分を蓄える構造になっています。葉は小さな羽状複葉で、乾季には落葉し、雨が降ると芽吹きます。そのユニークな形から盆栽にもされます。

ウルシ科オペルクリカリア属の落葉小高木で、学名は Operculicarya decaryi。英名は Elephant tree。

The Elephant tree (Operculicarya decaryi) belongs to Anacardiaceae (the Sumac family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is distributed in the southwestern part of Madagascar. Similar in form to the "baobab," the tree grows to a height of about 9 m. The trunk is enlarged and structured to store water. The leaves are small pinnate compound leaves that are deciduous during the dry season and sprout when it rains. Because of its unique shape, it is also used for bonsai.
