アメリカの中南部から西南部、メキシコにかけて広く分布しています。もっともふつうに見ることのできる「うちわぼてん（団扇サボテン）」で、高さは０．５〜１．５メートルになります。茎節は扁平な楕円形で、鋭い棘が生えています。４月から６月ごろ、鮮やかな黄色い花を咲かせます。果実は赤紫色に熟し、甘くて食べることができます。

サボテン科オプンティア属の団扇サボテンで、学名は Opuntia phaeacantha var. major。英名は Major prickly pear。

The major prickly pear (Opuntia phaeacantha var. major) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to the central-south and south-western United States and Mexico. This cactus is a most common prickly pear and can reach 0.5-1.5 m in height. The segments are flat elliptic with acute spines. The bright yellow flowers come in April to June. The fruits ripen burgundy red, sweet and edible.
