わが国の本州、岩手県以南の主に太平洋側から四国、九州に広く分布しています。低山地の木の幹や岩などに着生し、灰緑色の紙のようなかたちです。必要な水分や養分は空気中から取り入れています。「うめのきごけ」はとくに二酸化硫黄濃度に敏感で、大気汚染が進むと生育できません。そのため大気汚染の指標植物にもされています。また着生した枝は、お正月の生け花にも利用されます。 
ウメノキゴケ科ウメノキゴケ属の葉状地衣類で、学名は Parmotrema tinctorum。英名はありません。 
"Umenoki-goke" (Parmotrema tinctorum) belongs to the family Parmeliaceae. It is a foliose lichen that is native to southward from Iwate-prefecture to the Pacific Ocean Side of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This lichen grows in low mountains and is epiphytic on the trunks or rocks. It seems like a grayish-green paper. It imbibes moisture and nutrient from the air. This lichen is very sensitive to sulfur dioxide, and cannot be alive in the area where progress air pollution.
