オーストラリアのクイーンズランド州の中部から東部が原産です。グレビレア属の中で最も広く植栽され、また多くの園芸品種の母種となっています。葉は銀色に輝く緑色で、春から枝先に大きな花序をつけ、絹のような鮮紅色の花を咲かせます。花色はふつうは紅色ですが、白色もあることが知られています。 
ヤマモガシ科ハゴロモノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Grevillea banksii。英名は Red silky oak。 
The red silky oak (Grevillea banksii) belongs to the Proteaceae family. It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the central and eastern parts of Queensland, Australia. It is the most widely planted of the genus Grebilea and is the host species of many horticultural varieties. The leaves are silvery green, and the silky crimson flowers bloom in the large inflorescences at the end of the branches from spring.
