わが国の固有種で、各地に分布しています。沿海の山地などに生え、高さは４〜５メートルになります。葉は楕円形から広卵形で、十字対生します。５月から６月ごろ、葉腋や枝先に濃紅色の花を咲かせます。花冠の先端は５裂します。

スイカズラ科タニウツギ属の落葉低木で、学名は Weigela coraeensis f. rubriflora。英名はありません。

"Benibana-hakone-utsugi" (Weigela coraeensis f. rubriflora) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small deciduous tree that is an endemic species and distributed to all over Japan. This tree grows in coastal mountains and can reach 4-5 m in height. The leaves are elliptic to broad-ovate and arranged in decussate. The dark rose-pink flowers come in axils and terminal branches from May to June. The corolla is quintuple-lobate at the tips.
