The black bean (Castanospermum australe) belongs to Fabaceae (the Legume family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed east and north Australia. This tree grows in warmer rainforest and can reach 10-15 m in height. Leaves are dark green, odd-pinnately compound, and develops a dense rounded canopy. During spring to early summer, it bears sprays of bright reddish-orange flowers. Following flowering, large pods that contain 3-5 golfball-sized black seeds are produced. This seeds are poisonous, but the aborigines cracked and soaked in water them and used as foods. It is also called "Jack and the Beanstalk" in horticulture.
