中国南部またはインド洋諸島が原産だと考えられています。よく分枝して、高さは５メートルほどになります。雄しべと雌しべが合着した長い蕊柱（ずいちゅう）のある真っ赤な花を咲かせます。花期は７月から１０月ごろですが、暖地では一年中咲いています。中国名では、「朱槿（zhu jin）」。

アオイ科フヨウ属の常緑低木で、学名は Hibiscus rosa-sinensis。英名は Rose of China、Chinese hibiscus。

The Rose of China (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a small evergreen treeb that is believed to be native to southern China or the Indian Ocean islands. It is well branched and grows to a height of about 5 m. It produces bright red flowers with long gynostemium that stamens and pistils are joined together. The flowering season is from July to October, but in warm climates, it blooms all year round. Its Chinese name is "朱槿" (zhu jin).
