アメリカのノースカロライナ州からサウスカロライナ州に分布しています。高さは５〜１０センチくらいですが、食虫植物として有名です。葉の中央には感覚毛があり、虫がとまると葉が閉じて、周囲にある刺毛がふたの役目を果たします。５月から６月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして白い花を咲かせます。

モウセンゴケ科ハエジゴク属の常緑多年草で、学名は Dionaea muscipula。英名は Venus's fly trap。

The venus's fly trap (Dionaea muscipula) belongs to Droseraceae (the Sundew family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed to the eastern United States; North Carolina and South Carolina. It can reach 5-10 cm in height and it is famous for a carnivorous plant. When an insect contacts one of the hair-like trichomes that are found on the upper surface of each of the lobes, the trap closes. The flowering stalk is borne and the white flowers bloom from May to June.
