Common gorse (Ulex europaeus) belongs to the Fabeceae (the Pea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to western Europe. This shrub grows in sunny pastures, scrugs, waste place, and -t can reach 2-3 m in height. The young stems are green, with the shoots and leaves modified into green spines, 1-3 cm long. The yellow papilionacenous flowers bloom throughout the year, but mainly in early spring. The fruits are legume 2 cm long. Seeds remain viable for 30 years.
