わが国の本州、近畿地方以西から四国・九州、それに台湾に分布しています。海岸沿いの林縁などに生え、高さは２〜１０メートルになります。幹は根元から分枝します。葉は広卵形で対生し、全縁です。葉には独特の臭気があります。５月から６月ごろ、枝先から円錐形の花序をだし、淡黄色の小さな花を咲かせます。果実は球形の核果で、黒紫色に熟します。

クマツヅラ科ハマクサギ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Premna microphylla。英名はありません。

"Hama-kusagi" (Premna microphylla) belongs to Verbenaceae (the Vervena family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is distributed westward from Kinki district of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan and Taiwan. This tree grows in outskirts of woods along coasts and can reach 2-10 m in height. The stem is branched at the base. The leaves are broad ovate, alternate and entire. They have characteristic odor. The conical inflorescences are borne at the terminal branches and bloom small pale yellow flowers from May to June. The fruits are globose drupes and ripen purplish black.
