南アメリカやオーストラリアに分布している原種から改良された園芸品種です。高さは３０〜５０センチになり、４月から１０月ごろまで花を咲かせます。星形の筒状花で、赤色やピンク色、紫色、白色などの花色があります。わが国で栽培されるようになったのは、専売制度の規制緩和が行われた１９８５年からです。写真中４の品種は「ティンカーベル（cv. Tinkerbell）」。

ナス科タバコ属の多年草で、学名は Nicotiana x sanderae。英名は Flowering tobacco。

THe flowering tabacco (Nicotiana x sanderae) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is a perennial herb that is a cultivar breeded from South American and Australian original species. This herb can reach 30-50 cm in height and bloom flowers from April to October. The flowers are star-shaped tubular with red, pink, purple or white flower-colors. In Japan, this herb was started to cultivate in 1985 when eased the regulations of tabacco monopoly.
