Trichosanthes anguina

The Snake gourd (Trichosanthes anguina) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is an annual herb that is native to India and was introduced to Japan around the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912). It produces white flowers similar to those of the crow cucumber from July to September. The fruits are long and slender, more than 1 meter long, and are pale green with dark green stripes. The Japanese name comes from the snake-like shape of the fruit. Like the loofah, the young fruits are used as namasu (a dish of raw fish) or in soups and curries.
