ヨーロッパの西部から南西部に分布しています。林内や潅木帯に生え、高さは３０〜５０センチになります。茎は直立し、葉は掌状複葉で葉柄があり、狭披針形の小葉が７〜１３個つきます。冬から春にかけて、総状花序をだし、釣鐘形の淡い黄緑色の花を咲かせます。花には悪臭があります。

Stinking hellebore (Helleborus foetidus) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in western and southwestern Europe. It grows in forests and shrublands and is 30-50 cm tall. The stem is erect, and the leaves are palmately compound with a petiole and 7 to 13 narrowly lanceolate leaflets. From winter to spring, it produces racemes of bell-shaped, pale yellow-green flowers. The flowers have a foul odor.
