ヨーロッパが原産です。わが国へは明治時代に渡来しました。太くて短い地下茎があり、高さは２０〜５０センチになります。葉は長楕円形で基部は鏃形、上部の葉は茎を抱きます。５月から８月ごろ、茎の先に穂状花序をつけます。雌雄異株で、花びらはなく、雌花の柱頭や果実が赤くなります。

タデ科ギシギシ属の多年草で、学名は Rumex acetosella。英名は Sheep's sorrel。

The sheep's sorrel (Rumex acetosella) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe. It was introduced into Japan in Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). This herb has thick short rhizomes and can reach 20-50 cm in height. The leaves are oblong with arrowhead-shaped bases and the cauline leaves enfold stems. The panicles are borne on the stem apices and the reddish tinged, small flowers bloom from May to August. It is dioecious and the flowers are non-petaled.
