わが国の本州、近畿地方以北に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは１０メートルほどになります。樹皮は黒みを帯びた灰色です。葉は倒卵状円形で、十字対生します。材は器具などに利用されます。葉のかたちから別名で「まるばかえで（丸葉楓）」とも呼ばれます。

カエデ科カエデ属の落葉中高木で、学名は Acer distylum。英名はありません。

"Hitotsuba-kaede" (Acer distylum) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native from Kinki district north to Tohoku district of Honshu. This tree grows in mountains and it can reach about 10 m in height. The birk is blackish tinged gray. The leaves are obovate-round and arranged in decussate opposite pairs. The timber is used for equipments.
