わが国の本州、神奈川県以西から四国、九州に分布しています。「のこんぎく(野紺菊)」の変種で、川岸などに生え、高さは50〜100センチほどになります。葉は細い披針形で互生し、縁には疎らな鋸歯があって、葉の表面は、少しざらつきます。8月から11月ごろ、淡い紫色の頭状花を咲かせます。「のこんぎく」に含まれるという考えもあります。 
キク科シオン属の多年草で、学名は Aster microcephalus var. angustifolius (Aster ageratoides ssp. angustifolius。英名はありません。 
"Hosoba-kongiku" (Aster microcephalus var. angustifolius) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Kanagawa prefecture of Honshu west to Shikoku and Kyushu. This herb is a variant of Wild chrysanthemum (Aster microcephalus var. ovatus) , growing on river banks and up to a height of 50-100 cm. The leaves are thin lanceolate, alternate with sparse toothed edges, and the surfaces are slightly rough. The pale purple head flowers will bloom from August to November. There is also the idea that it is included in Wild chrysanthemum.
