南ヨーロッパの地中海沿岸が原産です。石灰岩の岩礫地や乾燥地帯に生え、高さは２０〜５０センチほどになります。上部の苞葉が、ピンクや紫色、白色などにきれいに色づくのが特徴です。７月から８月ごろ、小さな花を咲かせます。和名では「むらさきサルビア」と呼ばれます。

シソ科アキギリ属の一年草で、学名は Salvia viridis。英名は Painted sage, Clary。

The painted sage (Salvia viridis) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an annual herb that is native to southern Europe, coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea. This herb grows in limestone rocks or arid areas and can reach 20-50 cm in height. The small flowers come in July and August. It is difined that the upper bracts are colored pink, purple or white.
