>東南アジアを中心に中国南部やインド、フィリピンに70種ほどが分布しています。ふつうは地生ですがまれに着生します。茎は短くて、長楕円形から長舌形の葉が数個つきます。花は地味なものが多く、袋状の唇弁がユニークでスリッパに似ています。属名はギリシャ語の「女神のサンダル」に由来します。写真上・中1は、園芸品種の「チルトン(Paphiopedilum orchilla cv. Chilton)」。 
ラン科パフィオペディルム属の多年草で、学名は Paphiopedilum sp.(属の総称)。英名は Lady's slipper、Paphiopedilum。 
The lady's slipper (Paphiopedilum sp.) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is a an evergreen perennial herb that is native to center on Southeast Asia, southern China, India and the Philippine Islands. There are about 70 species. This herb is usually terrestrial, rarely epiphyte. The stem is short and the several leaves are oblong or long tongue-shaped. The flowers are commonly conservative with unique pouched lip.
