ヨーロッパ東部のカルパチア山脈周辺が原産です。西に伝わり、欧米で広く栽培されています。わが国へは、明治時代にアメリカから渡来しました。高さは２０メートルほどになります。樹皮は褐色から灰色で、平滑または割れ目が入ります。葉は羽状複葉で互生し、卵状披針形の小葉がつきます。小葉には不規則な鋸歯があり、頂小葉が最も大きくなります。果実は核果で、菓子やペストリー、風味づけなどに利用されます。別名で「せいようぐるみ（西洋胡桃）」や「かしぐるみ（樫胡桃）」とも呼ばれます。

クルミ科クルミ属の落葉高木で、学名は Juglans regia。英名は English walnut、Persian walnut。

The English walnut (Juglans regia) belongs to Juglandaceae (the Walnut family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to the Carpathian Mountains of eastern Europe. It was propagated to Western and has been cultivated widely in Europe and the United States. This tree was introduced into Japan via the United States in the days of Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). It can reach about 20 m in height. The barks are brown to gray and smooth to fissured. The leaves are alternate and pinnate compond with the ovate-lanceolate leaflets. The leaflets are irregulary serrate, and the apical leaflet is largest. The fruits are nuts and used in confectioneries, pastries, and for flavoring.
