Firecracker penstemon (Penstemon eatonii) belongs to the family Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It ia a perennial herb that is native to the western United States from California to the Rocky Mountains. This herb grows in desert, woodland, forest, and open plateau, and it can reach about 1 m in height. The leaves are lancolate to ovate, untoothed, and most of them are arranged in a low rosette next to the ground. The bright red tubular flowers bloom on vertical flowering stalks 30-120 cm high in early to mid-spring.
