北アメリカのロッキー山脈より北西部、カナダのブリティッシュコロンビア州からアメリカのオレゴン・アイダホ州にかけて分布しています。日当たりの良いマツ林や「やまよもぎ(山蓬)」のなかなどに生え、高さは5〜15センチほどになります。匍匐性があり、マット状に広がります。葉は針形で対生します。4月から6月ごろ、茎頂に薄紫色やピンク色、白色などの花を咲かせます。和名では「うめざきしばざくら(梅咲き芝桜)」と呼ばれます。 
ハナシノブ科フロックス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Phlox caespitosa(syn. Phlox douglasii)。英名は Tufted phlox。 
The Tufted phlox (Phlox caespitosa) belongs to Polemoniaceae (the Phlox family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northwest of the Rocky Mountains in North America, from British Columbia in Canada to Oregon and Idaho in the United States. It grows in sunny pine forests and among "Sagebrush", and is 5 to 15 cm tall. It is a creeping plant and spreads in a mat-like manner. Leaves are needle-shaped and opposite. From April to June, light purple, pink or white flowers bloom at the top of the stem. It is called "Umezaki-shibazakura".
