アメリカの東部が原産です。明るくて乾燥した林や草地、岩場などに生え、高さは１０〜２５センチになります。花は青紫色で、上の花弁は濃く、下の花弁は薄い色です。花期は４月から６月。葉のかたちから「とりあしすみれ（鳥足菫）」の和名があります。

The birdfoot violet (Viola pedata) belongs to Violaceae (the Violet family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the eastern part of United States. This herb grows in sunny dry forests, grasslands and rocky areas, and up 10-25 cm in height. The flowers are bluish purple, the upper petal is dark and the lower petal is pale. The flowering season is from April to June. The Jananese name is derived from the form of leaves.
