The Bridal's veil (Clerodendrum wallichii) belongs to Verbenaceae (thr Verbena family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from Assam in India to the Himalayas. It grows to a height of 1-2 m. The leaves are glossy green and lanceolate. It produces drooping greenish white flowers from the tips of its branches from fall to winter. It is called "kurarindo" in Japanese.
Incidentally, the origin of this Japanese name is said to be unknown, but I share the theory of Mr. Takashi Tsuyama of Ochanomizu University that it may have been derived from the obscure pronunciation of the genus name (The journal of Japanese botany, Vol.45, No.5). It seems natural that the genus name, "Clerodendrum" (kler-uh-den-druh m), has been transposed into the Japanese name, "kurarindo".
