ヨーロッパ東部から西アジアに分布しています。潅木帯や草地帯などに生え、高さは1メートルほどになります。低いところの葉は羽状で、上部の葉はふつう鋸歯があり、無柄から葉柄があります。4月から6月ごろ、総状花序に白色の十字花を咲かせます。葉や若い茎は、生のままあるいは加熱して食用にされます。根は多汁質で甘く、サラダに入れたり、加熱した野菜料理などに利用されます。また根は乾燥させたあと粉にして、パンを作るときの穀粉に混ぜたりすることもできます。
アブラナ科クランベ属の多年草で、学名は Crambe tataria (syn. Crambe tatarica)。英名は Tartar bread plant。 
The Tartar bread plant (Crambe tataria) belongs to Brassicaceae (the Mustard family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern Europe and West Asia. This herb grows in bushy and grassy places and it can reach about 1 m in height. The lower leaves are pinnate and the upper leaves are usually dentate, sessile to petiolate. The white cruciform flowers bloom in racemes from April to June. The leaves and young stems are edible and used as a raw or cooked. The root is fleshy and sweet and it can be used raw in salads, or be cooked as a vegetable. It can be also dried and ground into a powder, then mixed with cereal flours when making bread.
