Larrea tridentata

Larrea tridentata

The Creosote bush (Larrea tridentata) belongs to Zygophyllaceae (the Caltrop family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from the southwestern United States to northwestern Mexico. It grows on desert slopes and plains, reaching a height of about 1.2 m. It sometimes reaches 4.5 m. It is a typical drought-tolerant plant. It is well branched and produces pairs of glossy yellow-green leaves. It produces yellow, twisted, 5-petaled flowers in spring or anniversary. The leaves have a strong creosote-like pungent odor, especially after rain. Native Americans used it as a fungicide and emetic.
