ギリシャからブルガリア、ルーマニアそれにトルコ南西部に分布しています。地中海性気候の乾き気味の芝地やまばらな林内に生え、高さは10センチほどになります。3月のはじめ、光沢のある黄色い花を咲かせます。園芸化され、広く普及している小型の「クロッカス」のひとつです。 
アヤメ科クロッカス属の多年草で、学名は Crocus flavus。英名は Yellow crocus。 
The yellow crocus (Crocus flavus) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Greece to Bulgaria, Romania and southwestern Turkey. This herb grows in dry grasslands and sparse forests with a Mediterranean climate and can reach up to 10 cm in height. The shiny yellow flowers come in bloom at the beginning of March. It is one of the small "crocuses" that have been horticulturalized and widely used.
