わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島南部に分布しています。日当たりの良い野原や河岸などに生え、高さは４０〜８０センチになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、長楕円形の小葉を７〜１３個つけます。夜になると閉じます。７月から９月ごろ、葉腋から円錐花序をだし、小さな淡い紅紫色の蝶形花を咲かせます。和名は、根が地中に深く入って、駒（うま）を繋げられるほど丈夫だというところから。

マメ科コマツナギ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Indigofera pseudo-tinctoria。英名はありません。

The "Koma-tsunagi" (Indigofera pseudo-tinctoria) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as the southern Korean Peninsula. This shrub grows in sunny fields and stream banks, and can reach 40-80 cm in height. The leaves are impari-pinnate compound with 7-13 oblong leaflets. The leaflets close at night. The panicles are borne at the axils and the small, pale magenta, papilionacenous flowers bloom from July to September. The Japanese name comes from the fact that its roots go deep into the ground and are strong enough to hold a horse together.
